Since January 2000, the Galle Muslim Cultural Association has been funding financial assistance scholarships to needy students of merit who have passed the GCE Ordinary Level examinations and require financial assistance to continue their Advanced Level examinations.
The GMCA calls for applications within the Galle District soon after the GCE Ordinary Level examinations are released and students are chosen based on their lack of finances to continue their education as well as Ordinary Level examination results. Prospective applicants are interviewed so that a better understanding of their financial requirements as well as educational competency and determination to achieve educational attainment before they are chosen. The number of students offered financial assistance each year is determined by the amount of funds collected each year towards the GMCA Scholarship Fund.
Scholarships are still limited to only the Galle District and GMCA gives special consideration to students learning in the Tamil medium and hailing from village schools lacking many facilities for offering Advanced Level education in the Science and Mathematics streams and from families struggling to support their continuing education. GMCA further monitors the progress of the students, offering them encouragement and support through their Advanced Level years.
Over 150 students have thus far been assisted by the GMCA Scholarship Fund, with 22 students provided scholarships in 2015.
