The holy month of Ramadan is the most important month in the Islamic calendar and is of great significance to all Muslims around the world. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, one's spiritual nature naturally takes precedence which in turn allows one to get closer to Allah.
Ramadan is a time of intensive worship -- reading the Qur'an and attending special prayers, giving charity, purifying one's behaviour, and simply being extra conscious of doing and being good. Fasting is also a means of experiencing hunger and developing greater empathy for the less fortunate, and therefore being more appreciative and grateful of Allah’s blessings.
Thus the Galle Muslim Cultural Association (GMCA) conducts the ‘Share & Care’ programme every Ramadan month, where food packs of dry rations are distributed to the less fortunate families in the Galle District to help them fast during Ramadan. GMCA has been distributing dry rations to the needy in the Galle district for over 15 years now, reaching over 200 families in need.
